"While I often appreciate pushing the envelope as it relates to technique, we must never lose sight of why we cook: to nourish and make people happy. Dr. Weil's Fast Food, Good Food will help you and your family make food memories by balancing nourishment with joy and excitement."―Thomas Keller, Chef/Proprietor, The French Laundry
"Eating healthy can be oh-so-hard when the prospect of delivery seems both faster and easier. But with Dr. Andrew Weil's new book, you'll have 150 fast ways to get nutritious food in your belly."
―Amanda Woerner, Daily Burn
"Cooking need not be arduous, especially with Dr. Andrew Weil by your side. His new book...reminds us that cooking can be fun, fast and fulfilling....In a friendly and easygoing tone that makes this cookbook a joy to read, Dr. Weil also shares helpful tips on pantry essentials and maximizing your kitchen's efficiency. Just what the doctor ordered."
―Alan W. Petrucelli, Examiner
"This isn't a book for the coffee table, although the photographs are vibrant and beautiful to flip through. Dr. Andrew Weil's latest cookbook is meant for the kitchen. The simple, no-fuss recipes are approachable for even the most amateurish of cooks, but the food is exquisite....Fast Food, Good Food doesn't preach, it teaches you everything from how to use those kitchen tools that sit in your drawers to how to stock your pantry--a first step when adopting healthy eating habits."―Angela Carlos, The Daily Meal

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2019I have 100+ cookbooks, but still find that I need inspiration and ideas for healthy dishes that meet our dietary restrictions. My husband is vegetarian; my doctor has recommended that I limit methionine (chicken, beef, pork, fish, dairy). This book is a great addition to my collection. The pictures are beautiful. The recipes are approachable with easy to find ingredients and non-fussy directions.
I tried the Cashew Scream recipe (blend cashew milk and frozen berries to make a dessert); it turned out kind of thin but I'll try it again. Recipes on my list to try include: Roasted salmon topped with sake glazed shiitake, Broiled halibut with green harissa, Warm mushroom salad, Farro salad with marinated feta, olives & parsley, Mushroom quinoa pilaf, Quinoa with dates, olives, arugula & mint, and Orange-Coconut Macaroons.
True Food Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants, but the True Food Kitchen cookbook doesn't have a lot of recipes that are this quick or easy. This is the Andrew Weil cookbook I've been looking for.
I just wish it included nutritional information (calories, fat, carbohydrate, protein).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2024Healthful, delicious recipes, good ingredients that are not hard to find in any decent grocery store. Very glad to have this; and wish I'd bought it when it first came out.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2017After reading several of Dr. Weil's other books and eating at the "True Foods" restaurant in Houston, TX, I immediately started looking for his cook books. I found this one and also his "True Food" cookbook -- the restaurant's signature cookbook. Either of these books could be a coffee table book - They are very handsome and the photography is wonderful! I've made several of the recipes in "Fast Food, Good Food" and must say, they were tasty! I do not consider myself to be a good cook, but I was able to follow these recipes pretty well. The first recipe I tried was some salmon dish. I made it when a friend dropped in unexpectedly near lunch time: I was lucky to have a nice piece of salmon in the fridge, and I must say the meal was a hit! It went together in about 20 minutes start to finish with not a lot of cleanup. The only thing I really don't like about the book is that the recipe index is organized by recipe names rather than main ingredients (I would prefer both). This makes it hard to find a "type" of recipe if the main ingredient is not in the name. Case in point... the above referenced "salmon dish" -- I am struggling to find the recipe again, because apparently "salmon" is not in the recipe name!!! Another time I made "Ajax's Favorite Prawns with Garlic, Herbs, and Wine" Yummmmm! But to find this recipe, don't look under "Prawns" (as several others are indexed) but rather look under "Fish & Shellfish". Sigh. If that's this cookbook's only weakness, I guess I can live with it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021The natural and organic foods diet in this book is very good. Food can be nutritious and taste good. Weil has descriptions of many types of low, moderate, and expensive whole foods. Using this diet can delay diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and chronic illnesses to one's 60s or 70s, on average. Government promotion of natural foods that are rich in nutrients, fiber, and good fats is still on the weak side. People can be pro-active by seeing videos or reading books like this. Health insurance spending that most individuals engage in is often about 30% overpriced. The same money better spent every week on natural, whole, and organic foods. Occasional fast food is OK but most diets can be like this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2019I have made about 5 recipes from this cookbook and all have been keepers. Most of the ingredients are easily accessible, nothing overly fancy. I have seen cookbooks that require you to buy some special spice or exotic vinegar and I won't do that for just a teaspoon. That's just silly. I did buy some miso, as he has lots of recipes that use it, but it lasts for a long time, so willing to see if it's worth it. The recipes are good and filling and definitely very healthy. I've doctored them a bit for my taste, but not much. Wow! Really impressed and I love to cook. Definitely recommend! Excellent!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024First off, I love Dr. Weil's books. I've been following him for years, and honestly he changed the way I look at food and feed my family. This cookbook just seemed like a bit of a rehash of old ideas, and I would have preferred more pictures. Good information in general, but nothing I felt like I couldn't get from any of his previous work.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2015My husband and I have been trying to eat healthier and I needed cooking ideas. First of all, the book is beautiful to look through...outstanding photography. There are pictures of most recipes. I've tried many of the recipes, and they're really delicious. I've made the Yucatan Black Bean and Sweet Potato Tostadas twice, the Vegetable Frittata twice, the Basic French Vinaigrette a lot. My dishes have even looked like the pictures. Also, I live in Montana; we don't have odd or unusual ingredients available. I haven't found any weird ingredients so far. All directions have been clear, and dishes are easy to make. I wouldn't say they are super fast meals, but if you're dealing with veggies there is a little more prep. I'm thrilled with this book...can't wait to try more of the recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just love every new discovery that makes for a perfect meal
Now that I have received my 2 books by Dr Weil, I can start changing my old not so healthy recipes. His books are life changing. Just love every new discovery that makes for a perfect meal! Great recipes, but for someone in Northern Canada some foods cannot be found, substitutions do the job. Great book the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have much experience cooking and are looking for ways to make healthier meals then it is perfect for you
I was dissapointed. The book is aesthetically pleasing, that to me is an important quality in a cookbook. The recipes however are not very original. If you don't have much experience cooking and are looking for ways to make healthier meals then it is perfect for you.
